Summer Roadtrip 2010: Lobsters and Blueberries
TBG, Mignette and Moi are departing on the all-American summer tradition: the road trip. And because our kids are grown and gone, we’ve borrowed a child for the backseat: Moi niece R, who will:
- serve as the backseat buddy for Mignette
- act as tie-breaker over which roadside fast-food stop to pick
- provide the “how many hours til we get there” background noise
- deliver cold drinks and snacks from the back seat to the front
- walk Mignette at rest stops while TBG gases up and I search the store’s pop coolers wondering why I didn’t pack my own diet Canada Dry ginger ale
The passengers have been polled, and the popular items to stock-up on for the car are:
- pretzels
- water
- doggie treats
I’ve googled all potential Starbucks along the route. The Sirius radio remote control, various chargers, adapters, battery packs, maps, guidebooks, cameras and photography equipment are piled by the front door. Mignette’s leash, collar, travel bowl, dog food, treats, brush, extra bows and bags, and bones are in her travel bag. Oh yeah: our suitcases are piled there too.

This summer we’re driving to Maine, a first-time destination for all 4 of us. To get there from NYC, we’ll drive via Rhode Island (not direct, but TBG hasn’t been there, and he’s determined to check it off his state list) and we’ll also be first-time visitors to New Hampshire.
We’re driving I95 nearly all the way, with a few forages to more picturesque routes. We would have liked to take the very picturesque Rte 1 thru Maine, but we’ve been advised in August it’s bumper to bumper.
Why Maine this year?
- We’ve never been, and after years of living and traveling in Europe, TBG’s motto is See America First
- my brother and his family will be visiting his wife’s family in Maine, so there’ll be lots of kids and a mini family reunion
- Acadia National Park will offer lots of photo ops for TBG
- lobster and blueberries
- lumberjack log-rolling contests
- lighthouses, ocean drives, gorgeous sunrises over the ocean
- Diver Ed’s Dive In Theatre boat tour
- lobster and blueberries again. And again. And again.
Moi tip: A travel essential is my Kindle: I’ve loaded it and my iPhone with a few summer beach reads:

This is one of the BEST, can follow the routine, can imagine being with all of you, sounds like “enjoyable” for all, and certainly creates a “wish I was there” dream. Keep us “posted” on travel highlites – SHARE the trip with us !!!!!!
This sounds like a fantastic trip. Love the thought of borrowing a child. She definitely looks like a cutie with a super attitude. Have fun.
You’ll LOVE Maine. Have the local lobster – many if you can! Stop in Kittery for a little outlet shopping! Ogunquit and jump in the cold water and sandy beach – walk the Marginal Way along the coast while your niece is tubing the ocean current with the tides – a blast! Portland restaurants! Rockport’s picturesque town, Primo for dinner (www.primorestaurant.com). Boothbay for the tourist trap and all the way to Acadia – have a safe and fun trip! BTW – I would take the slow road and go Rte 1….Hopefully you catch a glimpse of a Moose too!
we loved Maine…but a long weekend was far too short! We are going back next summer to see some more of this beautiful state. See tomorrow’s post for a bit of our visit: and rest assured, plenty of lobster and blueberries! But sadly, no moose.
ciao for now!
