Shell Chic

Sunday this tweet from House Beautiful Magazine appeared on Moi screen:

House_Beautiful Make summer last! The creative tablescape by @toryburch uses a decorative shell to hold sea salt and forgoes a shaker: http://ow.ly/2yFlJ

I’ve been a fan of shell decorating for a long time, it’s a way for me to bring a bit of my South Florida home to my everyday city life. In fact, I blogged about my shell decor recently for The Antiques Diva!

But while I admire Tory Burch’s style, I’m a little bit more shell cheap! Instead of buying my shells, I collect them on the beach and incorporate them into my decor. bff Tampa T, a Florida native, taught me to

  • bring the shells home
  • rinse thoroughly in the sink
  • soak overnight in hot water mixed with clorox bleach
  • rinse again
  • dry in the sunshine

Lately I’ve been using shells I’ve collected as “vase gems” to hold a bouquet of flowers in place.

Moi tip: Between floral arrangements, I just pour the shells into the silverware compartment of my dishwasher, and run the dishwasher as normal when its full of dishes. This keeps my shells clean and white, and prevents any moss growing on the shells. Love it!

A ‘worthy’ article that can be enjoyed by all – beautifully written and beautifully ‘displayed’. I also read the article in House Beautiful and enjoyed YOURS considerably more !!!!

Every time I look at my seashell picture frame, I happily think of our girls’ trip to Florida.

j’adore my shell vase gems: I smell the ocean and the lilies, such a heady combination for a Tuesday afternoon.
